20 eco-gestures for citizens
Energy
Energy consumption via buildings in France, is responsible for 19% of GES emissions.
1-

Install a system of renewable energy production in your home : geothermic heat pump or heater, solar water heater for hot water. Insulate the roof: that will lower your energy consumption by about one third, and install double plated windows to reduce thermic exchanges (cuts down on thermic losses by 15%). Install a 'Canadian (or Provincial) well', which allows for cool air in the summer and warm air in winter. Don't over-heat your home: 19°C is sufficient: 1°C less makes for 7% of energy saved! In unoccupied rooms, lower the temperature even more. Use programmable heating thermostats to lower the temperature at night and during your absence. A thermostat can help save between 10-20% in energy consumption. To carry out home remodeling in order to cut down on your energy consumption, you can take advantage of tax credits, 'eco'-loans or financial aid.
2-

Electric machines on standby mode consume between 150-500 kWh per year and per household. A television consumes about 100 W when in use, and up to 20 W when on standby. Given the duration of the standby periods, your television can cost more money in electricity when you aren't watching it! Similarly, a pc and screen which are turned off continue to consume between 30 - 100 W, and a hi-fi between 10-30 W. Various electrical standby modes can represent up to 30% of electric consumption for individuals, or the annual production of a nuclear reactor.
3-

Energy labels present energetic efficiency to kitchen equipment and can help you make the right choice when purchasing household machines. Any sur-cost is quickly amortized thanks to electricity conservation. Thaw your freezer and refrigerator often: a layer of frost of only 3mm increases consumption by 30%. Verify that the refrigerator door closes properly. If the rubber is in good shape, it shouldn't be possible to slip a piece of paper between the door and the refrigerator. Concerning dishwashers and washing machines, opt for full loads and short cycles (avoid clothes dryers).
4-

Replace incandescent light bulbs by fluo-compact ones, or better yet, by induction light bulbs (100,000 hours life) or LED light bulbs (electro-luminescent diodes). The luminous yield of classic light bulbs, (or worse, halogenous lighting) do not even reach 10%: most of the electricity is converted into heat!
Water
5-

Verify your water consumption on a regular basis by noting the number of the water counter. A difference means that there could be a leak. Leaks lead to several dozens of liters wasted per day, and up to 400€ per year. A little leak of 10 drops per minute wastes a cubic meter of water per year, or the equivalent of food needs for an adult. To track a leak, control water consumption after having closed the faucets one by one.
6-

Wash the dishes, brush your teeth, wash your hands, shave, without leaving the water on. This could lead to 10 m3 per year and per person in water savings. Partially close the faucet of the basins and so as to limit the maximum debit. Take showers rather than baths, for an economy of 100 liters of water each time.
7-

Opt for installing mitigators, which allow for 10% water savings by regulating both the temperature and the debit. This savings corresponds to an economy of up to 50% by using a shower furnished with an interruptor. Use ventilators fixed on the faucets for 35% water savings. Choose a toilet flush with a double debit or dry toilets.
8-

Rain water may be used for watering the lawn or feeding the toilet flush. Recuperating rain water can be done by installing a tank in the ground, or by a simple elevated recovery which is smaller but easy to install.
Trash
A French citizen generates approximately 440 kg in trash per year, or 2.500 times the mass of the Eiffel tower for the whole of the French population.
9-

Recycle trash in appropriate containers : glass (except for lightbulbs, crystal, mirrors), cardboard and paper (except for wall paper, calque paper or carbon paper); food cartons, plastic bottles (except oil bottles and toxic products, polystyrene elements, bags and plastic wrap).
10-

26% of the trash generated by a French family are organic. Recycle them via composts, and even if you don't have a garden, consider a lombricompost. Optimize use of your equipment, each Frenchman generates an average of 14.5 kg of electric and electronic equipment per year.
11-

Depending on their specificity, lots of trash can be optimized via specific categories of recycling. Consider returing unused medecine to the pharmacy, even if it is outdated. Used tires may be returned to the garage for recycling. Most supermarkets have a repository for used batteries. And especially, bring your toxic wastes and their contents to the recycling center. Used low-consumption lightbulbs may be returned to the place you bought them for recycling. They contain mercury, which is highly toxic.
12-

Furniture and household appliances may be recycled by associations such as Emmaus and the Ressourceries, who sort and repair and sell them. Make donations of clothes that are in good condition via a humanitarian association. Lastly, donate books, compact disks and videos to multimedia libraries, hospitals or other humanitarian associations.
Food and consumption
Agriculture represents 14% and the manufacturing industry represents 20% of CO2 emissions in France.
13-

The 'AB' brand: organic producers use little or no pesticides in their production. Therefore 'AB' certified products are healthier and more environment-friendly (97% of French rivers are contaminated by pesticides). The 'AB' brand appears on the packaging and guarantees a minimum of 95% organic ingredients. Equitable commerce products guarantee that producers are remunerated on a more equitable basis than the world market. When purchasing products that come from great distances (chocolate, café, exotic fruits) why not buy products from the equitable commerce circuit. Furthermore, more and more equitable commerce products also carry the 'AB' organic label.
14-

Purchase local products and support short distribution circuits: buy from local fresh-air markets rather than from the supermarket. Purchase seasonal products, for instance, in winter, endives rather than tomatoes which were cultivated under heated greenhouses, and apples rather than strawberries from New Zealand or cherries from South Africa. Fruit that is imported out of season consumes 10 to 20 times more in gasoline than the same fruit produced locally and purchased in season.
15-

Purchase bulk or with a minimum of packaging. Purchase products which are made up of recyclable matter. Re-use packaging, refuse bags when they are proposed. Even if they are often recycled, cutting them out at the source remains the best solution. In France, 100,000 tons of plastic bags were thrown away in 2005.
16-

Meat production weighs heavily in terms of greenhouse gases (GES). The production of a kilogram of veal meat rejects approximately the same quantity of GES as a car travelling 220 kilometers. Furthermore, livestock (cows, goats, sheep) give off 25% of worldwide emissions of methane (methane has a potential for global warming 23 times superior to carbone dioxide. Regarding fish, the WWF indicates that 75% of fish ressources are being overly exploited, according to the FAO for 2006, 52% of fish stocks are being fully exploited, which means that they have reached their maximal balanced equilibrium. 20% are moderately exploited, 17% are overly exploited, 7% are already in danger, 3% are under-exploited, 1% is in the process of recuperating. If you purchase fish, choose those that nourish themselves on plants, such as carp or organic salmon.
Transportation
Transportation in France, is responsible for 27% of greenhouse gases.
17-

Prefer bicycles or walking, both of which are good for health. Short trips (less than 3 kilometers) are the most polluting. In the city, use buses, the tramway or the metro rather than the car. Encourage carpooling, for instance with your colleagues from work. Plan your trips in such a way as to reduce the total distance.
18-

Adopt a style of driving which is « responsible » and gentle: certain behavior leading to sudden braking or accelerations can lead to increases in gasoline consumption between 5% to 40%, Driving at 90 kilometers per hour consumes 10% less than driving at 100 kilometers per hour. Use air conditioning with caution: air conditioning is comfortable, but also leads to an over-consumption in gasoline. Cars using air conditioning consume between 3% to 5% more gasoline than cars not equipped with air conditioning. Keep your car well tuned: a well-tuned motor consumes up to 10% less in gasoline. Make sure your tires are inflated according to the pressure indicated by the tire company: if they are not pressurized enough, they increase the consumption of gasoline by approximately 6%.
19-

When purchasing a vehicle, opt for vehicles which have a catalytic convertor and a particle filter, or better yet, electric or hybrid vehicles. Only wash your car when needed. Washing a car consumes 150 liters of water. Opt for the traditional method: a pail, a sponge, and recuperated rain water. Bring used oil from an oil change and antigel remainders to a service station or a garage: the 80,000 tons of oil used each year in France can pollute 1,000 times the volume of the entire production of water for the country. Used batteries should be brought to the waste reception center.
20-

For travel in France or Europe, choose the train rather than the car or the plane. For example, a round trip from Paris to Monpellier emits 6,4 kilograms of CO2 for the train, whereas the plane and the car emit 182 kg CO2 and 301 kg CO2 respectively. The train emits 28 times less CO2 than the plane. If you must take a plane, you can compensate your CO2 emissions by donating the « carbon price » to associations. These associations help finance durable development projects which reduce CO2 emissions in developing countries (more efficient ovens, planting trees...).
